This book covers from August 6th, 1967, to August 19th, 1968. During that year, I went from Lance Corporal to Sergeant. Throughout this year, you will see how the other Marines and I dealt with some arrogant leaders who disrespected our knowledge of the field. Other leaders we had were total cowards and did not do their jobs, causing Marines to die in battles that could have been won. You will see how The Bear does his best to protect the Marines in his charge from the stupidity and cowardice of these leaders. By the end of the year, you will understand why the Marines of 3rd Platoon looked to The Bear for leadership more than they did their platoon commanders and platoon sergeants. That was because they knew The Bear was always trying to do what was right in every situation.

At the last 1st Battalion, 7th Marine Regiment reunion more than one 3rd Platoon Marine told me that he is alive today, because he listened to "The Bear". I am supremely proud to be "The Bear"!
