Established in 1844, the municipality originally included present-day Harrison and South Harrison Townships and the western edge of Elk Township. Swedes, Finns, and Quakers began settling here in the early 18th century, establishing farms and businesses along Raccoon and Oldmans Creeks and ancient Native American trails.
