2014 Reprint of 1947 Edition. Full facsimile of the original edition. Not reproduced with Optical Recognition Software. It is around these suppressed chapters from "The Possessed" that the dark legend of Dostoevsky as a Marquis de Sade has grown. Know by hearsay and magnified by rumor, Stavrogin's confession to the sexual abuse of a child has been considered by such biographers as Gide and Zweig to be as much the confession of the author as of his fictional character. Brilliantly translated by Virginia Woolf and S.S. Koteliansky, it is published here for the first time in the U.S. Also includes a psychoanalytic study of the author by Freud, and a history of the original manuscript and its publication by V. Komarovich.
