by Carolyn Van Der Vorst (Author)
Luke Moise Pierre van der Vorst, my son, died by suicide on September 17, 2021. He was 19 years old.
When we first brought Luke home from the Rainbow of Love orphanage in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, full of hope and joy, we could not have imagined that 17 years later, this sweet little boy in our arms would take his own life. It was inconceivable. Luke's passing was an unspeakable tragedy that shook me to my core. It also blew me wide open, expanding my heart and mind in unexpected new ways. I've come to believe that our entire lives are really a journey of healing. No one escapes this life trauma-free. We all experience hardships and challenges in a plethora of different ways. Sharing the story of my life with Luke as authentically as I can is part of my own healing journey. I hope it can be part of yours, too. I hope the story of Luke and me touches and expands your heart and mind, as it is expanding mine, so that we can continue to embrace life and all that it holds for us.
